Dream

You might visit the USSR before the USSR visits you - Hungarian joke in the communist era

"De las telenovelas" - answered the Romanian girl, and she has right.  Everything, what we want to learn to to be known, must be exercised daily. Extra luck if this exercise has a powerful tool like the movie.
This was known in the Soviet Union in the years 1940-41, so there was not enough only one anti-polish movie,  which is known by our readers. The next episode of this series, the Мечта (Dream) is a social drama,  but we will let to be seen its items of the anti-polish propaganda, and these items are close to the same with  Wind from East. .
Álmodozás

The spotting of  Dream is hided by some mystery.  The film was released in Sep  1943 in the USSR  (it is not known if it was ever released in abroad) but it was surely made in 1941.  In 1943 the Poles and Russians   are already allied, so why is released an anti-polish movie if they are allied? The answer is simple: at this time the polish capitalist government declares the responsibiilty of Stalin for Katyn massacre.

There are multiple copies of this film available in the Internet,  and the beginning of the one the director of this film speaks : the movie was completed on the historical day of 22nd Jun, 1941. The name of the director is Mihail Romm.
Mihail Romm 1901-71
Director of
Dreams

Avram Room   1894-1976
Director of Wind from East

I am afraid that this mystery means only a gentle silence about this work of Romm. But let us break this silence and see the main starting screen of this movie by Mosfilm. This is a small reminder about Mosfilm.

One of this copies starts with this screen :

For me the favorite movie is  Dream.
It plays before the Grand Patriotic War and was made  in the night of 22nd Jun 1941...

... My loveliest movie.
To see once again on the screen the greatest actors like  Radevskaya, Astanov, Plyatt, Boludiman, Kuzminova, Voynik - this is the happiness ...

The work of studio Mosfilm decorated with Order of Lenin, 1941

It is now obvious when was it made. There is also a copy only with summary :

The work of studio Mosfilm decorated with Order of Lenin

The story are different on the different copies.

This happened before the reunion of the land Ukraine. From the poorest West-Ukrainian villages thousand of  people went to the city to find work and happiness.

This happened in the year 1933..
From the poor Western-Ukrainian villages thousand of people went to the city to find work and happiness.

Film is available on DVD ...

This movie is based in the city of the tales, Lwówban which became Львов at the end of the movie
.

Lwów, Latin church

Львов, Opera house

The hero of the story, Anna (E. Kuzhmina), the peasant girl who arrives to this city which has some really interesting property.

 Two jails

Four factories

Thirty-nine whorehouse

Two hundred-forty shops

The Dream means a hotel, where live lots of poor, depression people - a typical East-european community - and we can follow their fate.

Beginning of the movie in Polish : Marzenie ...

...at the end in Russian: Мечта

R Plyatt, actor of Wind from East reappears in this movie, who became only later known in Hungary as priest Schlag of  17 moments of the spring. In the Wind from East he was Mateusz, the arrogant representative of the Polish power, now he plays Janek, the bohemian and charitable cab driver. We are able to recognize the new character of the Polish lords, the dandy, who already appeared in the Wind from East.

Mateusz the manager in  Wind from East

Stanisław Komorowsky businessman in Dream (M. Astanov)

Dandy Komorowsky  came to grief in the the coffee-house ...

-Serve me with this coffee normally  !

- Oeps !

Reappears our old familiar friend The Polish Policeman with The Polish Inspector, but that one is good enough dumb to humiliate, and can have him on with the basic tricks if he is looking for us. Let us talk later about the activity of  The Polish Policeman.

The Polish Inspector now made a gesture which will become very important. This time Anna works in this mentioned coffee-house and her life looks like fine comparing to her expectations.

Janek, the big-hearted cab-driver lives in the hotel, like  Lazar (A. Kislyakov), the engineer, the son of the owner, and Wanda (A. Voytchik), the (re)emerging dud journalist. Engineer Lazar has very good plans, which are not accepted by the companies because of the violence of the interest of the foreign shareholders . This attitude of the company could be a capitalistic attitude, but the pictures tell the truth, when Lazar leaves the building of the company after its rejection.

The Polish colonel shunts Lazar ...

The same scene in the master :

Wanda publishes a wedding ad, which is answered by Stanislaw Komorowsky businessman. Wanda  likes  Lazar very much, but the rich businessman must be the choice in a capitalistic society, she walks with him out. Lazar arrives at home very upset and lies : the plans were accepted. Wand has to give answer to  Komorowsky in three days.

In the background is Latin church

In the background is City hall

Wanda hears, that Lazar's plans were accepted, they go to a very expensive restaurant where the people dances with very strange pose. Certainly it turns out that Lazar has not enough money, any few he has was stolen from his mother. Komorowsky humilitates him. Wanda rushes to  Komorowsky turns out the terrific truth of  businessman

Wanda commits suicide ... the cross does not appear accidentally. Remember, it was a very important motive of  Wind from East.

The little society is shocked, Janek brings Anna to a mad cab-riding. The pictures make clearly: the main reason is not the capitalism ...

The most two despaired persons, Anna and Lazar decide to leave Poland .... come to the USSR ...

... but they does not approach their goal. They were arrested at the border...

... they are in the jail where The Polish Policeman appears and acts. As it is known, with terror and agression.

Remember the same gesture of The
Polish Inspector.

Here the gesture ends with a hit..

The end of the movie is also a hit. Lazar came back to  Lwów, to the hotel,  Anna disappears. After so many years The Golden September of 1939 is approached and Anna reappears. The Soviet troups arrive to Львов and  Anna visits the Dream pension, so Lazar asks: what happened with you?

- Where have you been Anna?
- I worked, in a factory.

- Nice factory. Where is it located,
in Katowice, in Poznan?

- There have you worked ??

- Yes. I started to walk, walk, walk
 ... and I arrived.

We should think that the movie was not shown after the De-Stalinization, but this is an error.. One of the ends of the copies is obvious: the previously seen anti-polish symbols are not problems.

This subject to be continued ...
